TEAMING UP WITH CHUAO CHOCOLATIER :: FOR THE LOVE

Roses are red, violets are blue, love is sweet and Chuao Chocolatier is too…because they’re giving away The Sweetheart Box (a $45 value) to one of my readers!

Over the past couple of years, I’ve had the great privilege to work with Chuao Chocolatier and shoot a lot for them, which in turn i get to “sample” some GREAT tasting chocolate :)  Can’t complain there.  So, when i teamed up with them for their ad in San Diego Magazine, they offered to give one lucky person a little something sweet for Valentine’s day!  So, the contest goes:

Leave a comment describing your best Valentine’s day experience, the best gift you received or a Valentine’s day love story! And, this time, let the comments fly…leave as many as you want and encourage your friends to do the same. Contest ends at 6pm tomorrow evening.

And, just so you can connect a face with this cute print ad, this image is from Ashlyn and Travis’s shoot a couple of months ago…You guys are famous!

Adam F - My best Valentine's memory has yet to even happen! February 14, 2010 will undoubtedly go down in the books as the best Valentine's Day ever, the day I get to marry my sweetheart, Dana Lisa. We'll be at our favorite resort in Indian Wells, CA to share this incredible day with our closest family and friends and we've got an amazing photographer to capture it all (wink, wink!) I can't wait to get that first peek of Dana in her dress . . . And of course, the best part: every Valentine's Day we get to re-live the day we were married!

Tara - this is a tough one... i've always thought of valentine's day as a commercial holiday so i've never really payed much attention to it. however, when dom and i were dating we did do a special night that i will never forget. i was living with 3 other girls at the time and decided to make dinner for him and another couple (to keep us "accountable"!) and i made fillet mignon with a veggie and some salad. it was very martha. dom showed up in a red cardigan sweater. we watched a chick flick and he and the other dude gagged while me and the other chick oooo-ed & awww-ed. good times.

jen }i{ - The Valentine's Day before Jase and I were married, he transformed his mom's house into a cozy restaurant for the two of us. He designed and created the menu and had it printed and placed on the ornately decorated dining room table. It was really cute, with three variations (that I could "choose") of the salad, chicken, potatoes and veggie that HE had already prepared for dinner - with ice cream as dessert. The house was completely done up with fanciness and he served me. Surprisingly, for a guy that lived off of cereal, he did an amazing job on the meal. :) He topped off the night with having a song already set to play at the end of dinner so that we could get up from the table and dance, to Jewel's "Near You Always." It was perfect. I can honestly say that this Valentine's Day memory has helped us float through the interspersed-hard-times of our 11 year marriage. He hasn't done anything as extravagant since, however, doing something like that - all the time - would get old. It's the little things that build this beautiful life we have now. Things like this: http://the.oppositeofbreaking.com/apples-to-apples/

Carrie - Oh, and what NOT to give? Men should never ever give their love a little blue box unless it ha somethin' sparkly inside! I once had a man give me a Tiffany's box and I about passed out while hyperventilating! He smiled with delight as he watched me untie the little ribbon and I, anticipating earrings..or a RING...was nonetheless let down by the KEYCHAIN I found in the box! Granted, I thanked him profusely for the gift but inside I was thinking..."now that would have been MUCH better received had it NOT been in the little blue box!" So men, take note....no blue boxes lest ya mean it! And who really needs them anyway? Gifts I mean? My fiance and I absolutely adore staying in on Valentine's Day...no gifts, no dressing up for an evening out...just us on the floor in our PJ's with a movie, some pizza and ice cream. Oh and wine...thankfully I have that keychain still cuz it works wonders opening bottles now!

Carrie - Well, I have two Valentine's Day memories...The first one took place in the early 80's in Los Angeles and the latter in 1994 in Connecticut. My Great-grandfather, after having lost his wife of over 50 years to breast cancer, found true love again with one of our family friends, who also coincidentally, had lost her husband of almost as many years. Having been given a second shot at love, they thought the best way to honor that gift was to be married on St. Valentine's Day. It was truly beautiful to see the both of them, once again happy and in love, as they stood at an alter made of rose petals and branches. Breathtaking. The latter was just funny. My boyfriend at the time, bless his little heart, decided to surprise me before we left work on Valentine's Day...he dragged me to the car, ruffled around in the back seat, and then popped up with a grin and gave me, I kid you not...one of those clear plastic wrapped chocolate boxes and a dozen LOTTERY TICKETS! If it had been ANYone else, I would have been disappointed that my significant other merely stopped at the gas station to grab me a gift as an afterthought on the way to work. But with him, he was clearly so pleased with himself...I couldn't help but to see the love in the gesture. So while i've yet to have gourmet chocolates on Valentine's Day...I've at the very least seen 2 very different expressions of love!

XIAO & TRACY :: ENGAGED!

After many emails and a rescheduled shoot, i was finally able to photograph the Love between Xiao & Tracy!  It makes me so happy when i see my couples walk up wearing COLOR!   They were REALLY good at looking into the camera (Xiao) and posing gracefully like a little doll (Tracy), that it made my job kinda easy!   I can’t wait to photograph their wedding this June!

AND, on a photographer’s note: This was my very first shoot using a 45mm F/2.8 Tilt/Shift lens. What do you think?!  I’M IN LOVE.  Thus, my vow and credo goes:

“I promise to not over-do it with the Tilt Shift lens.  I promise that i will not use this lens for EVERY SINGLE IMAGE.  I promise to use it sparingly and make my assistant rip it from my hands if need-be.” – Jackie Wonders

ENJOY!

I love this set.

My favorite of the day!

Xiao & Tracy- Thanks for letting me be overly detailed with you about every shot :)  I LOVED the way your images turned out and am so excited for your wedding day!

Love, Jackie

Looking forward to meeting you ( with Brooke B) at WPPI:)

BABY AIDEN :: NEWBORN

It’s the icing on the cake, the yummy juice at the end of your Otter Pop, the powdered sugar sprinkled on your french toast…Photographing newborns of past brides and grooms!  I feel so honored that James and Cristina allowed me to document one of the most precious times and people in their lives- first the wedding, now the new babe.  When i got my first glimpse of him, little Aiden struck me with ALL of that thick, dark, black hair of his!! that kid is never going bald when he’s older :) And, those rich, blue eyes too.  He was a perfect little gentlemen and let me do my thing…

2 boys : 3 girls…almost even :)

It was time for his snack break, so the big sisters and i went and had a fun little shoot in the front yard :)

My favorite.

Swineys- thank you 230598308 x’s over for allowing me to be a part of your life through my camera…such a priviledge :)  I can’t wait to see him take on those sisters of his!!!

Love, Jackie

  1. I ♥ These little Felt heart pins form Purl Bee.  OK, so i don’t really own these yet, but i am trying to find time to make these lil’ guys in the next week…operative word : trying.
  2. I ♥ the Birds and Nests stamp set that i got at this store that i always talk about so I’m just going to link it b/c I’m sure everyone is sick of me saying it’s name :-)
  3. I ♥ Meiko.  this girls is awesome.  good music. itunes.
  4. I ♥ My new book, The Big-Ass Book of Crafts, that my buddy Brooke got me for my birthday.  Ya, she just gave me my present 2 nights ago and my b-day was in November :)  haha…thank you B !

MY CHILDHOOD IN BOXES

Recently(like this past year), my parents cleaned out their garage and that meant i got my childhood delivered to my doorstep by them :)  I couldn’t believe the amount of boxes that kept coming and coming!  Ya, it’s kind of sad because you want to hold on to every little thing that you remember, as it validates your life and that you are you.  At least for me, they do.  My life is so drastically different than anything i could have ever dreamed or imagined it would be, so those little trinkets, chotchkies and mementos keep me grounded and real-  my little stones of remembrance, if you will.  So, as i was sifting through my New Kids On the Block game and tapes, Sweet Valley High books, trophies, awards, pictures, and Lisa Frank stickers and erasers, I became SO excited, yet again, to help my own daughter experience an amazing childhood that she’ll take with her for the rest of her life.  It’s in those little erasers, barbie dolls and care bears(for the guys, i guess i could say GI Joes and Batmans) that we become who we are.  So, here are some images of my chotchkies.  I decided i would throw them away, ONLY if i had images to capture that they existed :)

YOU’RE SO JEALOUS. This little guy was used and abused.  I remember playing some MJ Black and White on this bad boy!

Before we go any further, let me digress….I was a total sports girl as far back as i could remember.  And, yes, my maiden name was Young, so i didn’t move too far up in the alphabet…at least i got a cool last name, eh?!  One more token to add….i was a competitive bowler for 12+ years.  Yes, the kind who wear skirts and shirts with names on them..there, i said it on the world wide web.  i feel free! You *know* you want one of those bowling trophies!!

I was a cute and stylish Pee Wee Bowler in 1988. Is that a belt around my sweatshirt?  it sure is!  “High Game: 71″  { THIS CONFIRMS THE AWESOME }

Yep :)  Read ‘em and weep.

I hope you enjoyed a glimpse into my past… *sigh*

Mandy - Man how I wish I knew you back then..and I wish I still had my karate trophies. Great post. Love it.

Susan Young (Mom) - Jackie you forgot, softball, vollyball also some basketball and golf. I guess you would't have enough room on your blog to cover everything you did. And I left out all the things you only did once or twice. :)

Daisy Varley - Oh my! You totally just shot up on my coolness radar! Bowling?? Haha! That's awesome! We should set up a game so far and I can show off my lack of skills :)

Andy - shouldn't this blog post be titled "memory lane"...get it

brooke - soooo.... you left A VHS tape of one of your volleyball games here when you moved. sometimes, when i miss being your roomie, i make a big bowl of popcorn, watch it, and yell at the opposing team on tv. i think it helps you win. is that weird? oh good. nobody else is going to see this comment, right? right???

Matt (jackies husband) - PS...she still has her old bowling balls...yes that is balls (plural) apparently you need two for different "lane conditions". wowza you bowled a strike to my heart!!! I love you!!!

Ashlyn - C&C - oh this SO cracks me up, and make me love you more. So cute!

Tara - i was going to suggest that we start a couples bowling team, but since i can only knock pins down using the gutter guards i'm gonna keep dreaming!

LET’S GET TOGETHER AND FEED MY CAFFEINE ADDICTION

*UPDATE* Spots have been filled for the little gtg.  BUT, i would love for you to comment below if this is something you would be interested in doing in the future!  And, what are some things that you would like to know about…FAQ style?!  Thanks!

First thing’s first- I, Jacqueline Danielle Wonders, in no way, shape or form claim to know it all, know how to do it all, photograph it all, etc.  But, since I do get quite a few emails from other photographers asking for help or advice in certain areas, I thought I would see if any new photographers would want to meet up and talk shop?! (and also help me feed my never-ending “need” for caffeine)  If you are interested, we will be meeting MONDAY FEBRUARY 1st @ 7:30PM.  I am trying to keep the number of people that we have meet at 5-7 so it could be kind of intimate and not overwhelming for anyone.  Email me if you are interested and i can get you a few more details as they come!

AAAAANND, since i feel like a blog post is naked without a photo, here’s one from a recent shoot i did with the UBER talented ladies over at Posh Paperie, Carter & Cook Event Co., and The Floral Lab for a new online wedding magazine, Nonpareil,  that is sent to launch in February!

TAYLOR & LINDSAY :: JUST BECAUSE!

“Merry Christmas mom & dad!”

Taylor and Lindsay wanted to give their parents the gift of themselves for Christmas…on a fine art print :)  We had so much fun during the shoot because these two have giant, enormous personalities that are so contagious.  So it was hard not to post but i had to wait until after Christmas to show these fun images because i didn’t want to ruin a great gift and i’m HORRIBEL at keeping a surprise :)  Let’s start with my favorite from the day!!
